Justice League too many superheroes not much substance
I did a poll on my blog about Justice League. I asked folks to help me decide if I should watch Justice League in theaters or watch it when it comes to DVD. The response I got was, watch it in theaters and spend my hard earned money. So come weekend I watched Justice League in theaters. This superheroes and stars packed movie take place right after the event of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. So what’s the verdict on the movie? Since I have already spent my money so the least I can do is write this review. Was it worth it?
SPOILER ALERT!!!! If you have not watched ‘Justice League’ please be cautious of this speculations post. This post contains Spoilers.
The movie opens with Bruce Wayne a.k.a Batman burdened with the guilt of Superman’s death is trying to bring together a band of superheroes to face off an unknown threat. Even though the whole process of recruitment of superheroes is much disorganized, Batman and Wonder Woman manage to enlist Aquaman, Flash, Cyborg. I did not understand why they needed a team of superheroes. All the enlisted superheroes seemed useless.
Justice League has too many superheroes but it does not need them. Batman, Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman were completely useless. I don’t know why they needed Flash? He was portrayed as a scared kid running around doing nothing. After watching The Flash tv show and loving it this Justice League Flash, on the other hand, had no script or substance. There is absolutely no comparison.
Aquaman either needs more screen time or a movie to explain his backstory. I believe it is assumed that people will know Aquaman backstory. This tells me this movie was not written for all but select fans of DC comics. Aquaman as Flash seems powerless. What does Aquaman bring to the table by that I mean what are his powers and what is his contribution to the Justice League? All Aquaman seemed to bring was a pitchfork and him as a punching bag. He goes into a fight and keeps getting punched out.
Cyborg does contribute a little to the team, his link to the Mother box does give him some importance. His knowledge of how the Mother boxes work does come in handy. His ability to interface with technology is definitely a plus in his favor. However, Cyborg also needs a more in-depth story. Justice League did not give justice to Cyborg and leaves more to be desired.
Now for Batman, half the movie Batman is brooding that Superman is dead. I have no idea why did they go with Ben Affleck for the role of Batman. Maybe that’s because Batman’s story is as dull as Ben Affleck himself. Agreed Batman does not have superpowers but he does not seem to be the leader of the group. Batman is plagued with poor acting combined with lack of intelligence. Batman’s powers lie in his intelligence, his strategy and his deductive skills which are not high lightened in the movie which makes Batman seem like a sidekick or someone who is about to retire.
Wonder Woman, on the other hand, does seem like a leader and seems like getting her fair share of screen time. Wonder Woman keeps the team together she, looks understanding and insightful. Diana of Themyscira is shown to be a little playful as well as strong. Our beloved Wonder Woman is the star of the movie.
And then there is Superman who is resurrected by the team using the mother box. Superman is the sole of the move as none of the other heroes are needed just Superman was enough. He kicks everyone’s behind. So the real question is this a Superman movie or a Justice League? It should have been named Sidekick League as all other superheroes looked like Superman’s sidekicks.
Overall Justice League did not do justice to other superheroes and had a very poor plot. There needs to be more focus on characters of each superhero with more harmony amongst each other. Graphics (CGI) and action sequences were definitely awesome and that is the only thing good about the movie. With a huge budget if you are getting a movie like Justice League then we can say creativity has come to an end.
