Wonder Woman (2017) for Academy award? REALLY…..?

Do you agree with “Wonder Woman” 2017 as one of the contenders for Oscars? Hmmm….is it going to be a statement that AMPAS going to make about women or will they look at the quality of movies? Does public opinion affect Oscars? We have to wait and see in March 2018 till then let the speculations fly.

 

    Even though Wonder Woman is a good movie does it deserve an Oscar nomination? I do appreciate a woman director making a splash in the predominantly male industry; I really do, but the movie as a whole leaves much to be desired. It’s a good movie don’t get me wrong but it’s just a regular run of the mill superhero movie directed by a woman and has a woman cast in the superhero lead role. Is it the only thing that makes a movie Oscar worthy? While it is directed by a woman, which is great, it has nothing different than any other superhero movie. As a woman she is bulletproof, well almost bulletproof still does not command power. The movie leaves a bitter taste cause as a woman superhero, she is lied to and manipulated in coming to the new world. She is insulted for being a woman by powerful men in the British war room which feels a little degrading. She is portrayed as naïve when she cannot deduce she is the weapon even though she has some extraordinary powers. So the movie lacks exactly what it is being lauded for. It does not portray women empowerment.

Getting an Academy award should not be based on point of view above or its counterpoint. By that I mean just because a movie is directed by a woman should not make it eligible for an Oscar.

Is the Wonder Woman story any good? The story is mediocre or nothing special. As expected superhero fights and defeats a super-villain. I understand it the origin story but I expected a little more. A good plot was missing.

Are special effects (CGI) any good? Special effects are on par with most of the 2017 Sci-fi movies. It sometimes feels like you are watching a video game rather than a movie. Action scenes need more finesse though they are clear and not too shaky. I was not overly impressed with CGI.

Is acting any good? Acting is also not extraordinary as Gal Godat does not have much scope for acting mostly due to the script. Though I must agree she does a very good job with what she had to deal with. It will be a charm to see Gal Godat again in a squeal looking forward to that.

Music is phenomenal and enjoyed music a lot. Music for all the action scenes was perfect in my opinion.

After bashing this movie I would like to point out there is a lot of potential for future sequels. I for one would like more power given to our favorite Wonder Woman. I would like to see an empowered Wonder Woman getting an Oscar. Wouldn't we all love to see Wonder Woman as a role model than an eye candy? All in all Wonder Woman 2017 was a great start and Good Luck to the team.
