How does Marvel's The Punisher rank against other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) shows?
Netflix finally released Marvel's The Punisher on Nov 17th. That made my weekend of Nov 18th the ‘Bingkend’ a binge weekend. I had to finish the show in those two days that meant watching all 13 episodes of season 1 in two days and then writing this post.
SPOILER ALERT!!!! If you have not watched Marvel's The Punisher Season 1 released on Nov 17, 2017, please be advised this Speculations post contains spoilers.
Does Marvel's The Punisher feel like a superhero show or just an ordinary action show? Seems like Netflix released ‘The Punisher’, just ahead of Thanksgiving so my guess is they want to attract the holiday audience. Netflix always drops the whole season of Marvel web television series which is good for me as it makes my weekend.
I finished The Punisher and here is what I think. So far there was nothing Superhero about The Punisher. It was just another brutally violent action tv show with action in between drama. Punisher a.k.a Frank Castle has a lot of issues that he has to overcome. I know Punisher does not have any powers but still needs some superhero elements at least a formidable enemy.
After the revenge on killers of his family, Frank Castle is in a slump, breaking walls which seems pointless. Then suddenly he gets back into action after helping a coworker. Then show mixes veterans issues and deals with troubled vets. Then goes into politics of gun rights I was like WTF…..sorry for my language. I mean Gun rights, Vets trauma, and PTSD issues have its place and need serious efforts in resolving them, I respect that but why bring it into a superhero show. I like to watch sci-fi because I want to get away from political issues or hard troubling life issues and be in fantasy land. I felt like there were two shows running in parallel one about politics and other about the superhero.
To me, Punisher is a decisive superhero who decides who the bad guy is and punishes him. Here he is trying to find his identity then becomes involved into another guy’s (Micro’s) family. There is also too much pointless killing.
It’s not like I didn’t like anything about The Punisher no I didn’t say that. I did like some of the action scenes particularly the opening sequence. Direction and acting were flawless. Very nice storyline with nice stunts to accompany it makes us admire Frank Castle. I like the intro which is filmed nicely and brought together very well. The Punisher is definitely better than Daredevil as it is more realistic similar to Jessica Jones. In my opinion, Punisher is better than all Marvels’ previous releases including Luke Cage.
Bottom line Marvel's The Punisher is an excellent action show for someone who is not familiar with the Original comic and is a little distant from the original comic. It is definitely ranked higher than Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage as well as Defenders. I did not compare this with IronFist as I do not feel Ironfist even ranks anywhere. Ironfist is altogether different story.
I recommend this show if you can take horrific violence and do not have PTSD or trauma and is definitely not a family show.
